Evolution vs. Creationism Abstract In the history of science vs. religion there have been no issues more intensely debated than evolution vs. creationism. The issue is passionately debated since the majority of evidence is in favor of evolution, but the creation point of view can never be proved wrong because of religious belief. Human creation breaks down into three simple beliefs; creation theory, naturalistic evolution theory, and theistic evolution theory. The complexities of all three sides create a dilemma for what theory to support among all people, religious and non-religious. Evolution vs. Creationism The theories of human evolution may always cause a heated dispute. Each theory presents its own evidence proving its acceptance, but lacks enough evidence to prove the other theories incorrect. All the theories that attempt to explain human existence fall under the categories of creation theory, naturalistic evolution theory, and the theistic evolution theory. The creation theory explains that a certain God created the humans, and evolution does not exist. The naturalistic evolution theory states that evolution is driven by purely natural forces, and is not controlled by any input from a god, goddess, or multiple deities. The theistic evolution is a mixture of both creation and naturalistic theories. The theistic evolution theory states that god created the world and guides the evolution process (Religious Tolerance, 2004). The information presented in evolution studies must be viewed with an open mind since there is no definite proof or law of evolution. The dilemma boils down to science vs. religion. Effects of Quality Management on Domestic and Global Competition In Pakistan, Sanofi-Aventis and GlaxoSmithKline are pharmaceutical companies that market popular products and carry very similar medications. Companies like these have the mission and responsibility of providing medicines and vaccinations to better people’s live in different countries and communities. One of the largest and leading pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan is the Sanofi-Aventis Pakistan Limited. The chains put most of their focus on therapeutic areas such as: cardiovascular, thrombosis, oncology, central nervous systems function, metabolic disorders, internal medicine, and vaccinations (Sanofi, 2010). GlaxoSmithKline is also known for developing some of the nation’s leading global medicines in the fields of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. The strategic management methods this manufacturer has chosen to use has made them a leader in the industry, among its competitors with respect to changing markets and growth trends. In 2007, the number one rated pharmaceutical company was GlaxoSmithKline, which has fount its continued success in making very wise business decisions like delivering almost 1 billion vaccines to developing countries in 2009 (GlaxoSmithKline, 2010). Diseases such as cardiovascular issues, thrombosis, cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other major illnesses have been crucial public health issues for Pakistan because they have been proven to be a main contributor to the total global mortality rates. It is for this reason that companies like Sanofi-Aventis and GlaxoSmithKline have concentrated so much of their research efforts on those specific issues and areas. The result has resulted in a world-renowned reputation of expertise for both in the industry. The following paper will explain why the medications that are produced by the companies above are competitive in both domestic and global markets, and it will compare and contrast the quality management for these two organizations. Sanofi-Aventi’s is a multi-national organization and is currently the third-largest pharmaceutical group both France and Europe. It is an all-inclusive business as it conducts research, development, manufacturing, marketing the featured pharmaceuticals, and the company was formed in 2004 when the initial company, Sanofi-Synthelabo, bought out Aventis. Aventis had originally rejected the bids, and this turned into a three-month war until Sanofi-Synthelabo finally offered the acceptable bid of $54. 5 billion (Sanofi, 2010). After the bidding war was over, the Chairman of Sanofi-Aventis, Jean-Francois Dehecq, and the CEO, Gerard Le Fur, started the process of emphasizing the importance of customer service and their commitment to excellent service for the people who relied on their medications. Over the last several years, pricing and other various competitive methods and strategies of companies like these have been changing with technological developments, economic changes, federal legislation, and state drug substitution laws (Federal, 2010). With these impending changes, the overall market has undergone structural transformations as well that include the growth of the market for generic drugs, and company consolidations. The nature of this kind of competition is naturally subject to constant globally institutional and structural changes. GlaxoSmithKline has had a very notable history in the pharmaceutical industry as well since the early eighteenth century, and they are headquartered in the U. K. This company conducts business in the U. S. and boasts an estimated seven percent of the world’s total pharmaceutical market. Both company’s visions and plans were to become new, progressive companies were with great enthusiasm and vigor, as they had a clear vision of the desire to motivate the employees in almost 100 countries. Luckily, they already demonstrated an extensive portfolio of cutting-edge medications, reliable service to their patients and an overall commitment to the quality of life, so these factors enabled the company to continue to achieve their performance goals and meet the responsibilities they had to their communities. Coupled with evolving information technology and regular industry changes, there was and continues to be an increasing benefit and need for companies to choose and then charge differing prices to people in corresponding economic brackets. The competitive implications of these differential pricing tactics have offered companies like Sanofi-Aventi and GlaxoSmithKline the opportunities to spread their business over larger areas, more hospitals, and to involve themselves in other segments of demand by making themselves more flexible in the industry. These kinds of practices have probably changed the way they have partially because specific types of buyers as well as manufacturers have adopted and implement cost-controlling measures that are similar to those that have been used by traditional hospitals (Federal, 2010). The Sanofi-Aventis Industrial Affairs organization has been proven to be totally committed to providing the highest quality of service to its customers and patients, taking into consideration all of the current protocols of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) the company takes from its plants that are based at Karachi & Wah Cantt (Sanofi, 2010). As with almost any other organization, quality and the amount of productivity are very important and regularly monitored, and there is a great emphasis placed on maintaining Health and Safety codes in order to keep the employees safe on the job. During 2005, the Industrial Affairs department of Sanofi-Aventis continued to focus on committing their time and energy to providing the highest quality of customer service, while meeting their own production goals. GlaxoSmithKline has been experiencing their own specific challenges due to regulatory issues, patent expiration issues, and increased pressures that are coming from different healthcare providers that have created an environment of tension, lower growth rates, and higher risk for the company. They are addressing these challenges with three priorities: grow and expand on a diversified global business foundation, delivering quality products of high value, and finally simplifying the general operating model. The Pakistani pharmaceutical market has been and remains to be weighed down with financial and producing difficulties. Government regulations and control over fixed prices has made many of the drugs offered unaffordable to consumers, and this has resulted in people searching for what they need on the black market at increased prices, or the drugs have just disappeared completely. In this kind of high-tension environment, both global manufacturers and local foreign-owned companies have proven that they are not able to make the profits needed for capital investment. Currently, there are no formal public drug reimbursement programs, although patent laws became more regulated in December 2000 (Sanofi, 2010). In the year 2002, Pakistan’s regulation laws became even weaker than they had been. In reaction to this, the formation and recruitments of drug inspection teams were brought in to investigate the manufacturing and sales of fraudulent drugs, but unfortunately have not had satisfactory results so far, largely due to a lack of necessary resources and various bureaucratic complications. Though both Sanofi-Aventis and GlaxoSmithKline have been suffering from the declines of sales and the resulting losses in profitability for the past few years, the companies continue to make every effort to not only regain their positions in the industry, but to exceed expectations. The ways in which quality management can have major affects on the current position of both of these companies in both a domestic and the global market are to keep their focus on their core competitive edge and to work to further improve its internal controls within each company. Literature Review Over the last few years the hashtag Black Lives Matter has become a hot topic. This organization is trying to bring awareness to the issues that people of color face. They are also trying to bring â€Å"real† equality to people of color. Many non-people of color feel like black people are no longer oppressed. I plan to delve into systematic racism and how it is a real issue. I will be looking into the prison industrial complex, and police brutality examining how it relates back to slavery. Many police officers do not face consequences when they use excessive force, on people of color vs non-people of color. Just by looking at the current and past relationship between the police and people of color, needs to be addressed. It seems as if every time you turn around there is a person of color being killed on a daily basis by the police. There are too many people of color losing their lives by the hands of the police while other races are not. This relates to slavery and how slave patrols were used to keep runaway slaves in check. Anorexia2 Essay It would seem today that eating disorders are on the rise. While this may be true, the numbers may appear to grow only because more cases are being brought out into the open. One interpretation of an eating disorder is termed as a relationship between the person and food that appears abnormal. Anorexia Nervosa is one of the most prevalent eating disorder diseases. The word Anorexia itself means, lack of appetite, and as for the definition of Anorexia, Anorexia is an all encompassing pursuit of thinness, occurring most often in adolescents and young adult women. This is accomplished by avoidance of eating by any means possible. The person affected by Anorexia has an absolutely terrifying fear of becoming obese. In short, food becomes the enemy, this is described as weight phobia. The person feels too fat when in reality the person is terribly underweight. Anorexia affects all kinds of people, especially teenagers, and is the third most common chronic illness that can be found in adole scent women. An estimated amount of between % and 3% of teenagers will be diagnosed with Anorexia. This may not sound like very many people, but numbers have increased, between the 1950s and mid 1970s, the incidences of Anorexia increased by almost 300%. Of all the patients that visit doctors for Anorexia, about 90% are women. Anorexia, though, does not plague only women. This disorder is not exclusive to one gender. Since this problem does not only include women, men are also referred to as being caught in the trap of Anorexia. The percentage of males diagnosed with the disorder have grown to 10%, and of children dealing with Anorexia, 25% are boys. The mean onset age of Anorexia in males is between the ages of 17 and 24. Men are actually more likely to hide an eating disorder, and it may be in an advanced stage before a diagnosis has been made. Anorexia in males may not be as detectable, due to the misinterpretations of physicians in the patients diagnosis. Much of the same risk f actors may be found in both men and women. Looking at the psychological perspective, a few reasons can be seen. There are people who have personality disorders such as obsessive-compulsive problems like perfectionism, obsession with appearances, and weight. A person such as this can often be seen standing in front of a mirror for long periods of time, is often critical of hisor her physical appearance and is afraid to lose control of what is going on in day to day life. Low self-esteem, depression, stress and anxiety are also major reasons why a person might suffer from an eating disorder. The effects of surroundings or environment can greatly influence eating disorders. The family also plays a major role, since close relationships with people influence ones attitudes and behaviors. Also, suffering physical and sexual abuse may lead a person to an eating disorder because they see it as a way to control something in their lives. Aside from family, pressure from peers and the society around us can contribute to the growing number of Anorexics. Since surroundings are so influential on us all, what surrounds us more than the media? When one looks at the media today, it is difficult not to notice the fashion industry. To look at the fashion models, who are 15% thinner than the average American woman, one can clearly see that underneath the seasons hottest new trends the taller-than-average women are very, very slender almost to the point of being gaunt. Society seems to teach the people that they have to look a certain way to be successful and accepted. Anorexia itself has certain characteristics, concerning the thought processes, the physical aspects, and the eating patterns related to it. The previously discussed psychological factors that lead up to an eating disorder like depression, low self-esteem, and obsession, all may lead to insomnia, mood swings, hyperactivity, and suicide. The physical signs are quite startling as well, such include an irregular heartbeat, the person is often cold and has frequent headaches, a tingling sensation in the hands, feet, and face, dizziness, lightheadedness, blood in a persons vomit, bruised knuckles and fingers from induced vomiting, dry skin, brittle hair and loss of hair. Victims lose 15% of their total body weight with a failure to gain the weight back. Other symptoms include hypertension, dry skin, brittle hair and nails, dental deterioration and muscle wasting. The eating behavior of the anorectic may be cutting food into tiny pieces, eating extremely slow, and aimlessly pushing food aro und on his/her plate. As devastating as Anorexia is, it can be treated. The very basic principle of treatment is to prevent death by starvation. This often entails the patient being admitted to a hospital for monitoring, followed by an outpatient program after improvement is noted. While being treated as an in-patient, the person is weighed in the morning, after urination. The daily fluid intake is also monitored. The restroom is taken off-limits for a minimum of two hours after eating to prevent induced vomiting. The daily calorie intake is in the range of 1,500 to 2,000 calories and is gradually increased to allow for the body to adjust to the new amounts of food. In conclusion, Anorexia greatly affects all who are touched by it. Boyfriends, girlfriends, best friends, and close family all feel the icy finger of pain as they see the one they love try to fight such an overwhelming battle. With these cases becoming more and more apparent in todays world. Its important that people are aware and, know how to spot eating disorders, and help someone else or them selves overcome something like Anorexia. Another eating disorder disease is Bulimia. People who live with Bulimia seek out binge and purge episodes. They will eat a large amounts of food in a short period of time and then use behaviors such as taking laxatives or self-induced vomiting, in order to punish themselves for something they feel they should be blamed for. This can be in direct relation to how they feel about themselves, or how they feel over a particular event in their lives. The Bulimic will also seek these episodes to avoid and let out feelings of anger, depression, stress or anxiety. People suffering from Bulimia are usually aware they have an problem. Fascinated by food they sometimes buy magazines and cookbooks to read recipes, and enjoy discussing dieting issues. Some of the behavioral signs can be, recurring episodes of rapid food consumption followed by tremendous guilt and purging, a feeling of lacking control over his or her eating behaviors, regularly engaging in stringent diet plans and exercise, the m isuse of laxatives, and/or diet pills can all be warning signs someone is suffering with Bulimia. It is important to realize that what makes a person Bulimic, as opposed to Anorexic, is not the purging, but the cycle of bingeing and purging. Purging may be using laxatives or self-induced vomiting, but there are Bulimics who use other inappropriate compensatory behaviors such as compulsive exercise to attempt to burn off the calories of a binge, or fasting the day following a binge. It is not uncommon for a people suffering with Bulimia to take diet pills in an attempt to keep from bingeing or to use diuretics to try to lose weight. A victim will often hide food for later binges, they will often eat secretly and can have an inconsistent weight. It is important to note that you can still suffer from Bulimia even if you dont have any of the signs present. In other words, if you think you have Bulimia, its dangerous to read about the signs and think I dont have one of the symptoms, so I must not be Bulimic. One of the most common medicines is Prozac in this fight to beat and cure Bulimia.(fluoxetine hydrochloride), an antidepressant. It is usually prescribed in 10mg or 20mg capsules in doses of 20mg to 80mg per day. The indications are depression, symptomatic relief of depressive illness, such as Bulimia. The most common side effect though are anxiety, nervousness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, upset stomach, appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach gas, rash and itching. Less common is changes in sex drive, abnormal ejaculation, impotence, abnormal dreams, difficulty concentrating, increased appetite, hair loss, dry skin, chest pains, abnormal heart rhythms, blood pressure changes, double vision, urinary pain, eye or ear pain, and low blood sugar. You see even the most effective medications have flaws in interaction with this disease. Most people with this disease are put into the hospital and on the same treatment as Anorexia victims. Both Anorexia a nd Bulimia have many similarities in both illnesses, the most common being the cause. There seems to be a common occurrence of sexual and/or physical and emotional abuse in direct relation to eating disorders. There also seems to be a direct connection in some people to clinical Depression. The eating disorder sometimes causes the depression or the depression can lead to the eating disorder. All in all, eating disorders are very complex emotional issues.
